Oil on gessoboard
16x20
Motivation:
I worked for years with this model. In this recent piece I wanted to work in oil – certainly a departure from the dozens of drawings and watercolors I had produced of her over the previous 3 years. There is strength, peace, and quite in this piece. I like the profile for its sense of detachment. She is here; but not here.
Work:
These images show the stages I go through to arrive at a final piece. The first sketch is one of many as I searched for an idea. The model and I reviewed sketches and gestural drawings; then together we arrive at a pose. The second drawing is from life - again more a sketch than finished art. The third piece is the oil painting itself. Here I drew a much tighter piece – working from life, my sketches, and color notes.
